Academic Mentoring for Teens in Years 10, 11, 12 and 13

Set your teen up for life by giving them the priceless gift of learning how to learn … their way

So they can get the best grades they can now AND in the future!

I offer the training, support, guidance and accountability to get your teen confident with learning – a lot more quickly and easily than you ever imagined.

Wouldn’t it be nice if your teen just got on with their revision?

You ask them whether they’ve done their homework and they tell you it’s already done.

They seem motivated and engaged.

They have free time to enjoy hobbies

They seem happy, confident and relaxed. YAY!

But that’s not what happens, is it?

They come home from school tired, snappy and irritable.

They are tearful and stressed.

They give up easily and think it’s because they lack motivation (I’m 99% sure that it won’t be that they actually lack motivation by the way!).

They don’t know what they are good at or think that they are not good at anything.

They constantly compare themselves to others.

Right now, you’re probably frustrated and not sure what to do next.

I hear you! I have teens too.

Maybe you have tried one or all of the following:

Contacted your teen’s school and received a response that was less detailed than you hoped for.

Googled “How to help my teen with Maths/English/Science” (delete as appropriate), saw the huge amount of resources available and felt completely overwhelmed by the volume. And the jargon.

Employed a tutor.

In the face of such uncertainty, it can be easy to look around at what everybody else seems to be doing and feel like you should do the same so that your teen doesn’t miss out.

You are now wondering how you will afford to get a tutor for every subject without taking out a second mortgage or selling a kidney.

But there is another way.

You can get your teen an academic mentor (that’s me, by the way) who can teach your teen how to learn, rather than spoon-feeding them the content to pass the exams.

Hear me out.

Teachers are being held more and more accountable for their students’ results.

I can guarantee that your teen will have been bombarded with Powerpoints, past papers, worksheets, knowledge organisers and acronyms for each and every subject.

Once it gets close to the exams, there will be before school interventions, lunchtime interventions, after school interventions, holiday interventions.

Your teen’s school will already have the teaching of the content very much in hand.

But the only person responsible for your teen’s learning is your teen.

And your overwhelmed, stressed-out, sensitive teen may not have a single idea where to start.

I will give your teen a step-by- step strategy and ongoing support

So that they can take control of their own learning … their way.

Your teen might be struggling right now in a particular subject.

Maybe they are struggling in more than one subject.

They might be aiming for As or 9’s, but be stuck on a C or a 5 with no idea how to move up.

Each time they don’t get the grade they want, their old learning blocks resurface.

I’m not smart enough

I can’t do this

I’ve never been any good at English

I’m too scared to ask

Your teen wants to do well but doesn’t know how to revise.

They work hard but are not getting the grades they want and deserve.

Maybe they want more individual guidance on what they specifically need to do but are too shy to ask their teachers in front of 30 other students.

They need some extra motivation and support to keep going.

How are your teen’s learning blocks holding them back from getting the grades they deserve?

They do their homework but have no idea how it fits with what they need to do in the exam.

They write a lot in the exam but still get low scores.

They get their marks back, assume they are not smart enough and stop trying so hard.

They are so stressed about the time limit in the exam that they can’t think straight.

Your teen probably got their learning blocks way back at primary school – perhaps they were put on the “low table” for Maths or English and now continue to tell themselves that they are no good.

For every limiting belief, there’s an original story to unpack and a pattern to break so your teen can feel more empowered to learn.

So, you know what will turn this around for them?

Not more teaching.

Not forking out for even more tutors.

Definitely not writing out their class notes again in pretty coloured pens.

The difference between those who gain the high marks in exams and those who don’t is not the amount of tuition they have had, but the amount of independent learning they have done.

The answer is this: remove the learning blocks, discover their preferred revision methods, create a plan, provide ongoing support.

Hi,  I’m Charlotte

I know what it feels like to experience challenges and frustration around learning.

As a young child, teachers referred to me as “Dilly Dolly Daydream” (enough said).

By the time I reached secondary school, I had found a way to mask my struggles. I worked hard. Like super hard. So hard that nobody noticed I was struggling. And that’s the way I liked it.

I learnt ways to learn my own way in my own time. And I got the excellent grades.

It was as an adult when the wheels started to fall off my plan.

Other people seemed to just know what to do. I permanently felt that I’d missed the memo (at work, in life, just generally).

Where expectations were clear, I flourished.

Where they were less so, I felt clueless.

Then I was diagnosed with ADHD. It explained everything.

However, this has never held me back. In many ways, as a teacher, my neurodivergence has been one of my biggest superpowers:

I understand the importance of clarity and make sure I provide this for my students.

I have a variety of hacks for getting around things I find less than easy.

I think outside the box.

We all have our own unique learning preferences, not just those who identify as neurodivergent.

And when we tap into these, this is when we get the success we deserve.

I can help your teen to identify and release the blocks holding them back, help them make a plan that suits their own unique way of learning and then support them to stick it.

Your teen will have the confidence to drive their own learning forward.

What happens when your teen upgrades their learning mindset?

Deep down inside them, your teen has all the resources they need to learn whatever they want to learn.

Once they clear away the old behaviours and beliefs that are no longer serving them, this will show up in their grades too.

Here is a small sample of teens who have experienced this first hand:

“Charlotte has built a fantastic rapport with our son and as a result he is responding confidently and learning effectively, even when the sessions have been virtual, as opposed to face-to-face. Our son’s passion for English, and language in general, has been encouraged and enhanced by Charlotte’s calm, fun and insightful teaching. I would highly recommend her.”

“I joined Charlotte in preparation for my GCSEs. When I first joined, my ability to analyse texts and construct paragraphs wasn’t the greatest but Charlotte helped me and supported me and a clear difference was made as I went from scraping grade 4s and 5s to achieving grade 7s.”

“I cannot recommend this lovely lady enough… my daughter was in set 4 out of 5 for English. Within a year, she has moved up to 2 sets, and now is in 2nd set. She is currently achieving grades and remarks from teachers we never thought possible.”

“Charlotte has been a godsend! She has been encouraging and patient with my daughter whilst building up her confidence – her grades have improved dramatically since working with Charlotte. My only complaint is that I wish I had found her earlier!”

My daughter has gone from a Yr 9 child who dislikes reading, resulting in declining grades, to a child whose grades have trebled. Charlotte has given her the tools and confidence to express and deepen her skills. Charlotte teaches in a relaxed, effective and professional manner. We would highly recommend her.”

“My daughter has worked with Charlotte for the past year. She loves going and is making fantastic progress but best of all she has developed a real love for English. Charlotte is nurturing, thoughtful and passionate and that’s what children respond most to. I highly recommend her services.”

Charlotte has helped me build confidence … and has tailored our sessions to the areas that I need improvement in. I have thoroughly enjoyed her sessions and I am extremely grateful for all the help and work she has put in to help me reach my full potential. I would highly recommend Charlotte.

Success means different things to different people.

What will success look like for your teen?

Introducing the Comprehensive Learning to Learn Breakthrough Mentoring Package

(followed by ongoing, expert Maths and English support)

This is what you and your teen will get when you sign up for my mentoring programme:

  • A safe, non-judgemental space for your teen to speak openly about their struggles
  • Tools and techniques to remove individual learning blocks
  • A link to a set of folders (one for each of their subjects) containing example past papers for their exam board and links to the most useable, comprehensive revision resources on the net at the click of a button
  • A personalised daily revision plan that fits with their preferred revision methods.

Your teen will learn how to get clear of limiting beliefs and feel confident in their ability to learn as I guide them through these four essential modules over a period of 4 weeks:

Week 1: Goal Setting – I will help your teen to find their “why” by identifying their values, strengths and future aspirations. We will use these to help them set their OWN target grades. This will unlock their motivation to study.

Week 2: Removing Learning Blocks: Using the principles of neuroscience and Neuro-Linguistic Programming, I will teach your teen the tools to remove their learning blocks so that they can start their learning with a clean slate.

Week 3: Creating a Plan: By identifying your teen’s preferred revision methods, together we will create an individual daily revision plan that fits your teen’s lifestyle. They will know exactly what to revise when in the lead-up to their exams.

Week 4: Developing Self-belief: I will teach your teen the tools to believe in themselves and their abilities so that they have the resources to remain confident in their learning in the long-term (including techniques to get them back on track when they have those inevitable wobbles).

What is your teen’s success worth to you?

Imagine…

They’ve gone up 3 grades whilst still having time for hobbies.

You’ve freed yourself up from nagging them to do homework.

They have future goals that excite and motivate them.

They are happy and confident.

How good does that feel? What’s the value of knowing that you have given them that confidence to succeed independently?

My mentoring package will clearly lead them through the steps they need to take to create a huge shift in their mindset and grades.

And they’ll get the support to overcome any self-doubt, uncertainty, and fear.

It’s a win-win – invest in them now so that you can rest assured they will have the tools they need to succeed in the future.

Your investment is just £60 per week

This is broken down as follows:
£240
(£60 per week for 4 weeks) for the initial Learning to Learn Breakthrough Mentoring Package.

Followed by ongoing Maths and English Feedback and Fix sessions (optional)

£30 per week for English OR Maths (1 x 30 minute session per week)

£60 per week for both English AND Maths (2 x 30 minute sessions per week)

*Maths Feedback and Fix sessions will be delivered by my husband, Martin.

Still thinking of getting traditional hourly tuition for each subject?

Let’s look at it in terms of your savings over a 14-week term.

Traditional hourly tuition

Minimum cost for a highly skilled English or Maths tutor is £45 per week per subject

14 weeks x 45 = £630 (1 tutor)

                           £1260 (2 tutors)

VS

My mentoring package

Breakthrough package = 4 sessions of coaching and mentoring to help with ALL learning plus 10 weeks of English Feedback and Fix sessions = 4 x 60 + 10 x 30 = £540

Breakthrough package for English AND Maths

4 sessions of coaching and mentoring to help with ALL learning plus 10 weeks of English AND Maths “feedback and fix” sessions = 14 x 60  = £840

For just English – that’s a saving of £90 per term (nearly £500 per school year)

For both English and Maths – that’s a saving of £420 (£1200 per school year).

Financially, it’s a no-brainer.

But there’s an even more important benefit.

Your teen is already being taught all the content at school.

But it is less than easy for schools to mark an exam paper per week per student (and provide detailed individual feedback to help your teen get to the next level week on week).

The marking would be unsustainable.

But we as 1:1 mentors can.

And gaining this valuable, regular individual feedback is the quickest way to improve grades.

And the best part? Because our feedback sessions are 30 minutes rather than one hour, the whole 30 minutes will be spent teaching, feeding back and answering questions about work your teen has already completed before the session.

You will be paying for our expertise – not paying through the nose for us to watch your teen complete the work during the session.

What does this mean for your teen?

  • They get weekly practice answering questions independently
  • They get detailed individual feedback on EVERY SINGLE piece of work they produce
  • Every piece of work they produce is celebrated
  • They get all their questions answered.
  • They will always know exactly where they are at and what they need to do next to improve.

Meet Martin (my husband) who will run the Maths Feedback and Fix sessions

As well as being an all-round fab human being (although I am a little biased), he was a teacher of GCSE and A-level Maths for 22 years and is still a GCSE Examiner. He is now a full-time consultant and content creator. He has co-written Maths text books, spoken at national Maths teaching conferences and had several articles published. As you can see, he really loves Maths!

Together we home educated our teens during their primary school years.

FAQs

I see myself as a mixture of all three roles.

Sometimes I will tutor.

Sometimes I will mentor.

Sometimes I will coach.

This looks like:

  • forming a trusting long-term relationship with your teen.
  • helping them set their own academic, career and personal goals.
  • asking the right questions to help them discover their own potential.
  • offering advice and guidance to help them take the next step towards success.
  • sharing my expertise and knowledge of the education system.
  • teaching necessary subject content during the Feedback and Fix sessions.
  • celebrating their successes with them.

If your teen is finding school less than easy, they might be feeling sad or anxious. If they need a listening ear, a gentle prod and somebody to ask the right questions so that they can look to the future with confidence, I can help. Some teens just need a safe space to work out who they are, what they want and somebody to help them dig deep to find the resources within them to achieve their goals. This is what I offer.

If your teen is struggling with their mental health they may need the help of a medical professional such as a counsellor, psychiatrist or psychotherapist before they feel ready to take control of their future. I will always let you know if I think your teen needs this support and will point you in the right direction. They can always come back to mentoring when they feel ready.

The answer is yes if…

  • You know that your lovely teen is perfect just as they are and does not need “fixing” – they don’t need to be louder, smarter or better at sport because you want your teen to be the best version of themselves, not the best version of somebody else.
  • You are willing to trust and allow your teen to follow their passions and interests and set their own goals (even if they don’t quite match with your aspirations for them!)
  • You and your teen are curious and willing to try out new ways of thinking or new ways of doing things
  • Your teen is open to the idea that with the right support, they can achieve anything they want to achieve
  • Your teen is prepared to chat openly with me
  • Your teen is ready to take action to get the life they want

I might not be the right person for your teen if …

  • You answer no to any of the above

One final question: have you shown your teen my website and asked them if they want to work with me? (you’d be surprised how many parents don’t).

It really will only work if your teen wants to be coached. I know. Frustrating, right?

I have been told that I am “nice” on more the one occasion but for a more objective view, you might like to check out what others say about me here.

I offer a free discovery call so that your teen can meet me before we start the sessions. If they decide not to go ahead after this, that’s absolutely fine (no offence taken!)

Keep an eye on my social media (icons in the header) for updates about what is to come or sign up below if you would like to be kept informed via email, so that you can be first to know when the waiting list opens!
