Beyond English and Maths: 5 essential life lessons to teach your teen

When it comes to raising teenagers, we often focus on their academic success, with English and Maths taking centre stage.

Yes, these subjects are important. A pass in English and Maths is the “ticket” to get to the next stage, whether that be 6th form, college or an apprenticeship.

But in placing so much emphasis on the academics, are we forgetting to teach our teens these fundamental life skills that will be vital for the rest of their lives, regardless of which career path they choose?

1) Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence, or EQ, is the ability to understand and manage emotions effectively; it includes self-awareness, empathy, and interpersonal skills.

Teaching your teen about emotional intelligence is vital because it gives them the tools to build healthy relationships, resolve conflicts, and handle stress.

Think about the biggest challenges you have faced in your life. I bet somewhere within that challenge was conflict or difficulties in a relationship. There isn’t an adult in the world who does not, at some point, encounter these issues. It’s part of being human.

Encourage open conversations with your teen about emotions, validate their feelings, and teach them problem-solving techniques.

By helping them develop emotional intelligence, you will set your teen on a path to navigate the complexities of human interactions with empathy and understanding (and you may save them from a whole lot of heart ache in doing so).

2) Financial Literacy

Money plays a significant role in our lives, and yet, many teenagers enter adulthood without a basic understanding of financial literacy.

Teach your teen the value of money: budgeting, saving, and responsible spending. Introduce them to concepts like credit, investments, and the importance of living within their means.

By instilling financial literacy early on, you empower your teen to make informed decisions, avoid debt traps, and build a secure financial future.

Martin Lewis has created some awesome resources to teach teens about finances which can be found here Your Money Matters – England Edition – Young Enterprise & Young Money (young-enterprise.org.uk)

3) Critical Thinking and Problem Solving

In a rapidly evolving world, critical thinking and problem-solving skills are invaluable. Encourage your teen to think critically, question assumptions, and seek multiple perspectives.

Teach them how to analyse situations, break down complex problems, and develop creative solutions.

Engage in discussions that promote critical thinking and encourage them to approach challenges with a growth mindset.

By nurturing these skills, you will equip your teen to tackle obstacles and make informed decisions throughout their lives.

4) Resilience and Mental Well-being

Life is full of ups and downs, and it’s essential to teach your teen how to bounce back from setbacks and maintain their mental well-being.

Help them develop resilience by emphasising the importance of a positive mindset, perseverance, and self-care.

Teach them strategies to manage stress, such as practicing mindfulness, engaging in physical activity, and seeking support when needed.

By prioritising their mental health and building resilience, you empower your teen to navigate life’s inevitable challenges with strength and adaptability.

5) Communication and Interpersonal Skills

Effective communication is a fundamental skill that transcends academic subjects.

Teach your teen how to express themselves clearly, listen actively, and engage in respectful dialogue.

Encourage them to practise active communication in various settings, including social interactions, team projects, and public speaking.

By honing their communication and interpersonal skills, you equip your teen to build strong relationships, collaborate effectively, and succeed in their personal and professional lives.

While academic success in English and Maths is important, it’s equally crucial to teach our teens essential life lessons that will shape their overall development.

Let’s invest time and effort into teaching these life lessons alongside traditional academic subjects, empowering our teens to thrive in a complex and ever-changing world.
